Potluck Picnic at Fort Hunt Park to Welcome the Golden Rule to the DC Region Sunday, April 2, 2023   Noon - 4:00 pm

Illustration of the Golden Rule by Albert S. Bigelow (1906-1993). He was an artist, architect, former Navy commander, and Quaker.

He served as captain of the Golden Rule which he and colleagues attempted to sail into the Eniwetok Proving Grounds, the U.S. nuclear test site in the Marshall Islands of the Pacific in February 1958.

We invite you to join us as we gather to welcome the Golden Rule to the DC area and to celebrate the indigenous people who are the original stewards of this watershed.

Crew members of the peace boat and Helen Jaccard, the Golden Rule Project manager, will be joined by antinuclear, environmental, and indigenous rights leaders.

Fort Hunt Park is located at 8999 Fort Hunt Road Alexandria, VA 22308 on the George Washington Memorial Parkway between Alexandria, Virginia and George Washington’s Mount Vernon. We’ll gather at Public Area D-1. The King Street – Old Town Metro is five miles north. Call Mike for a ride from the station. 301-542-9867

For the pot-luck lunch, we ask you to bring your own reusable dishware, cutlery and cup. We’ll have a couple of barbecues to heat up food.  We also ask that guests bring cloth napkins and/or dish towels to eliminate the need for paper products. If you can, try to bring an American Indian food item to serve at least two people. We’ll pass the hat at the event to cover the cost of the rental of the park and farm-raised oysters and fish.

Piscataway Matriarch, Julie Tayac Yates will hold a brief land acknowledgement, a traditional custom that dates back centuries. A land acknowledgment is a formal statement that recognizes and respects Indigenous Peoples as traditional stewards of this land and the enduring relationship that exists between Indigenous Peoples and their traditional territories.

Fort Hunt Park is located in the center of the historic Piscataway Indian nation. Piscataway National Park is located in Maryland directly across the river. Indigenous peoples have lived on these banks for 10,000 years.

We will regroup in town
after a day of celebration in the park.

More on the Golden Rule

Helen Jaccard said Veterans For Peace has recovered and restored the original peace boat and are sailing the Golden Rule for nuclear disarmament. “We are heading north and will enter Washington, D.C. on April 2," she said.

In 1958, a small group of peace activists sailed the Golden Rule to the Marshall Islands to stop nuclear weapons tests. That inspired many peacemakers and peace ships that followed. "With the danger of nuclear war being greater than ever, it's become clear that if we don't stop war, it will stop us,” Jaccard said.   See more on the mission of the Golden Rule.
